Third week of January was spent enjoying authentic cabin life and getting active outdoors by exploring the icy wilderness of Hossa national park with people from Germany, who decided to skip the tourist traps and challenge themselves in the Finnish wilds by joining one of our all-inclusive holiday experiences. Temperature stayed firmly around -20 degrees Celsius through the whole week as we made our way across the frozen lakes and through the snowy forests by snowshoes, went dog-sledding, visited our beloved reindeer of course and built a shelter from snow.
Walking 25 km in three days doesn´t sound like much, but up to 70 cm of soft powder snow made the winter walking quite tough at times. Gladly hiking in the Hossa national park offers various options where to go so it´s easy to change routes in case the conditions get too difficult or prevent crossing a certain lake due to slush for example. The amazing winter colors changing from peachy orange to deep frozen blue made it all worth it and we even got the chance to witness the dance of the northern lights one night. Wildlife had been on the move during these times and we saw a lot of tracks of moose, pine martens and different grouses, especially during the first walk when we went to see the most beautiful old-growth forest in the whole region.
The restful atmosphere of the wintery landscapes and getting exposed to the conditions showed their power again and a strong sense of rejuvenation and presence were the uppermost emotions as the week came to its end. Here´s a short video shot during this wonderful wilderness holiday experience:
