Step into the serenity of Oulanka on a private 9 km snowshoe hike to the spectacular Ristikallio viewpoint. Ristikallio is a rugged rock formation in the Aventojoki River and the trail leading to the site is the original section of the very famous Karhunkierros hiking trail. Guided by a local wilderness guide, this walk will take you to the less crowded part of the Oulanka area where high cliffs give way to frozen mires, snow-covered northern forests and untouched winter landscapes. This experience is designed for travelers who value authenticity, silence and deep connection with nature.
The starting point of this adventure is located along the Sallantie road and the hike starts with steep stairs down. After the stairs the trail crosses a mire area, passes through pine heaths and herb-rich forests and follows the frozen banks of the Aventojoki River for quite a while. Along the way your guide will point out animal tracks in the snow and the pace of the walking is suited to your group. After 4 km of hiking we reach the majestic Ristikallio, from where we descend 200 meters down a slope to the open wilderness hut and fireplace where we will have reindeer soup and a sandwich by the fire. On the way back we will head off the trails and make our own trail across the snowy wilderness and back to the starting point, making the walk more adventurous and circular rather than hiking back and forth on the same trail.
This trip includes everything from transfers, rental equipment to lunch – all you need to take care yourself is shoes and clothing suited for winter conditions and a backpack to carry drinking water, extra clothing and snacks. What’s included in my trip price?
Pick up from and drop off to your accommodation in Ruka/Kuusamo, equipment rentals (snowshoes/poles), lunch (reindeer soup, sandwich and coffee/tea) and the expertise of your local guide from the welcome till the farewell.
NOT INCLUDED: winter clothing, personal travel insurance
Other info:
For this trip you need to have with you a daypack to carry water and extra clothing, warm shoes and clothing suited for winter conditions. Winter clothing can be rented from Ruka, please ask if necessary.

Before confirming your place and sending you an invoice, we agree on pick up/drop off. After this we are ready to send you an invoice and when it´s paid, your trip is confirmed. Along with the invoice we will send you further instructions and inform you on the terms and conditions.
When booking several different day trips or people all at once, we can give some discount so groups of friends and families etc. please do request a personalized offer.
