Rising above Kuusamo, Iivaara is a true scenic fell offering wide, open views from its summit that is 470m above sea level. A beautiful, partially demanding 10km hiking trail with some ups and downs runs through the area, rewarding hikers with peaceful wilderness, varied terrain and unforgettable scenery. This private adventure led by a local wilderness guide is a wonderful escape from the more crowded areas near Ruka and Oulanka and is designed for those who value space, unhurried exploration and a genuine connection to the northern wilderness. Step off the beaten path and into the deep winter silence of Iivaara, one of Kuusamo´s most atmospheric fell areas.
After an hour´s drive south-east from Ruka, we reach the starting point from where the hiking begins. First 2 km of the walk is a steady climb towards the peak and after we have reached the top, we begin our circular walk on this vast nature reserve. In the past, people gathered here on Iivaara’s summit during summer nights to admire the midnight sun and the vast landscapes unfolding in every direction. After 3 more kilometers of hiking across this unique complex of northern fells we reach an open wilderness hut and a fireplace, where your guide will serve you reindeer soup, a sandwich and coffee/tea by the fire. First part of walking back to the starting point is a steady 3 km climb through old-growth forests and open fell terrain and the last 2 km is a smooth descent back to the car.
This trip includes everything from transfers, rental equipment to lunch – all you need to take care yourself is shoes and clothing suited for winter conditions and a backpack to carry drinking water, extra clothing and snacks. What’s included in my trip price?
Pick up from and drop off to your accommodation in Ruka/Kuusamo, equipment rentals (snowshoes/poles), lunch (reindeer soup, sandwich and coffee/tea) and the expertise of your local guide from the welcome till the farewell.
NOT INCLUDED: winter clothing, personal travel insurance
Other info:
For this trip you need to have with you a daypack to carry water and extra clothing, warm shoes and clothing suited for winter conditions. Winter clothing can be rented from Ruka, please ask if necessary.

Before confirming your place and sending you an invoice, we agree on pick up/drop off. After this we are ready to send you an invoice and when it´s paid, your trip is confirmed. Along with the invoice we will send you further instructions and inform you on the terms and conditions.
When booking several different day trips or people all at once, we can give some discount so groups of friends and families etc. please do request a personalized offer.
