Experience the wilderness of Hossa National Park on a private, tailor-made snowshoe hike led by a local guide. This all-inclusive day trip from Kuusamo is designed for small groups seeking authenticity, cultural depth and quiet landscapes. Highlights of the day are witnessing the 4000 year old rock paintings left by the early hunter-gatherers of the region and visiting our private reindeer farm, where you get to feed these beautiful animals and learn about reindeer herding as a traditional way of life.
This day trip begins with your guide picking you up from the agreed meeting point in Ruka / Kuusamo, followed by approximately 1,5h drive to the Hossa national park where we begin our circular 6km snowshoe hike to the ancient site of Värikallio. The walk takes us through pristine pine forests, across frozen mires and lakes and finally after 3km of hiking, down to the Colored Rock where these thousands of years old images offer a powerful connection to the early inhabitants of the area and their deep relationship with nature. Lunch (reindeer soup, sandwich, coffee/tea) is served by the fire, before it´s time to walk another 3 km following a trail that leads us through dense spruce-dominated forests and along frozen rivers before reaching the starting point at around 2 pm.
After we have finished the walk we do a short 15 min transfer to visit and feed the reindeer at our farm that is not open to the general public. Here you´ll meet the reindeer up close, learn about the yearly cycle of this special way of life and enjoy unhurried time with these iconic northern animals in a peaceful, authentic setting. After the animals are fed and satisfied, it´s time for a transfer back to your accommodation in Ruka / Kuusamo.
This trip includes everything from transfers, rental equipment to lunch – all you need to take care yourself is shoes and clothing suited for winter conditions and a backpack to carry drinking water, extra clothing and snacks. The exact route and pace are always adapted to your experience, physical fitness and the prevailing snow and weather conditions. What’s included in my trip price?
Pick up from and drop off to your accommodation in Ruka/Kuusamo, equipment rentals (snowshoes/poles), lunch (reindeer soup, sandwich and coffee/tea), feeding the reindeer and the expertise of your local guide from the welcome till the farewell.
NOT INCLUDED: winter clothing, personal travel insurance
Other info:
For this trip you need to have with you a daypack to carry water and extra clothing, warm shoes and clothing suited for winter conditions. Winter clothing can be rented from Ruka, please ask if necessary.
