In the end of March in Hossa the weather is mostly stunning providing excellent setting for forest skiing and ice-fishing and just enjoying the silence and the sceneries of the wintery wilderness. Forest skiing means working your way through untouched snow with equipment suitable for moving in this kind of conditions. Skis have to be wider and longer and the poles have to provide more support in deep snow.
During daytime when the sun is shining, temperature usually stays close to zero degrees Celsius providing us with great conditions to be active outdoors. In the night time the temperature still drops to -20 degrees Celsius. And because we have had clear starry night skies during the last few nights here in Hossa, and a little luck of course, we have witnessed the dance of the Northern Lights for couple of times! They were the most impressive ones in over a decade and because we don´t have that much light pollution here, watching them was a thing to remember. Unfortunately my current photography equipment didn´t allow me to immortalize the astonishing view…
Water is slowly trickling down from the eaves and birds start to open their voice after the long dark winter; spring is almost here but not just yet! All together the conditions couldn´t have been better. I spent several memorable days in the Hossa area with outdoor activities like feeding the reindeer, going forest skiing and ice-fishing. Of course all of the fish I take home is intended to be eaten so I also spent time cooking delicious homemade food prepared from self-caught ingredients including brown trout, pike and perch. As a sidenote, I consider myself as a responsible fisherman and I value the principles of sustainable fishing. This means that you comply with the rules and do not exploit the fish stocks; when you have caught enough fish to eat or your license is full, you release the rest or stop fishing.
Below I have a few pictures taken on these experiential days, they tell more than a thousand words. Late winter sure is a great time for outdoor activities in beautiful surroundings!
